Acinic Cell Carcinoma of the Minor Salivary Glands of the Tongue: A Case Study with Review of Literature
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background: Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a relatively rare and slowly growing tumor of the major salivary glands, usually arising from the parotid and rarely from the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands. ACC accounts for 3 to 4% of parotid tumors, 2 to 6% of all salivary gland tumors and 10 to 17% of all malignant salivary gland tumors. Case report: A 40-year-old woman reported a slow growing mass in the oral cavity. The transoral aspiration biopsy was reported as pleomorphic adenoma arising from the minor salivary glands of the junctional zone of base of tongue. Rest of the neck examination was normal and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed the mass confined to the superficial layers of the tongue without invasion. Intervention: The tumor was resected transorally with adequate margins. The tumor histology was typical of ACC with the margins free and wide on all the sides. The patient was kept on monthly follow-up where palpable nodes developed during the course of 6 months. The neck was addressed with supraomohyoid dissection and followed up without irradiation. Conclusion: ACC is a low-grade malignant salivary neoplasm rarely diagnosed in minor salivary glands of the oral cavity. The overall prognosis after surgical resection depends on the extent of lesion and the adequacy of the initial resection. Hence, keeping in mind the malignant potential of the disease careful long-term follow-up is advised.

Central Acinic Cell Carcinoma of the Mandible Simulating as Benign Odontogenic Lesion: A Case Report
Centrally occurring salivary gland tumors are rare. Because of a considerable overlap between the clinical and histopathological features, this group of tumors often produces a diagnostic difficulty to the clinicians and oral pathologists. Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is an unusual, low-grade, malignant salivary gland tumor that represents approximately 2% of the salivary gland tumors with almos...
متن کاملAcinic Cell Carcinoma of the Parotid Gland with Four Morphological Features
Acinic cell carcinoma arising in salivary glands is a rare tumor, accounting for 2% to 5% of the primary neoplasms of the parotid gland. When these tumors are well-differentiated, the neoplasia has innocuous aspect, due to the similarity to normal parotid tissue. This makes the diagnosis difficult. Initially the malignancy of this tumor was uncertain; however, recent studies have declared it as...

Acinic cell carcinoma of minor salivary gland of the base of tongue is very rare. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common tumor in the base of tongue. We present a patient with gigantic acinic cell carcinoma of the base of tongue. This patient required emergency tracheotomy before surgery, because he had dyspnea when he came to our hospital. We removed this tumor by pull-through method and p...

Acinic cell adenocarcinoma (ACC) is a low-grade malignant salivary neoplasm that constitutes approximately 17% of all primary salivary gland malignancies. In the head and neck region, the parotid gland is the predominant site of origin and ACC is usually more frequent in women than men. Previous radiation exposure and familial predisposition are some of the risk factors for ACC. ACCs rarely inv...

Hyalinizying clear cell carcinoma is a rare tumor which affects women more than men and is more common in minor salivary glands. The purpose of this paper was to describe a case of hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma of buccal vestibule in a 55-year-old woman. It is important to differentiate this neoplasm from other tumors with clear cell features because of their differences in treatment and cli...
